what is the difference between IPX9 & IPX9K Ratings?
From: BONAD  Date: 2024-03-13 10:24:15

What does it mean of the IPX and IPX9K?

K" refers to the test band pressurisation requirements, IPX9K test pressure needs to reach 10,000Kpa, and then extended to other levels of protection with K, such as 4K, 6K, in fact, all have pressure requirements.

IPX9 and IPX9K are both standard IP enclosure waterproof grade, both of them meet the requirements of international standards ISO20653-2013, VW80000, Article 14.2.9 in GB/T4208-2017 and Fig. 7, Fig. 8, Fig. 9, Fig. 10, Fig. 11, Fig. 12 waterproof grade IPX9/9K. Among them, IPX9 is without increased pressure, while IPX9K is high temperature and high pressure spray test.

Degrees of protection against water

Table 4 contains short descriptions of the degrees of protection with the relevant requirements.

The degrees of protection 1 to 6K for the protection against water always include the preceding degrees of protection. Due to different physical effects, this does not apply automatically for the degrees of protection against water 7. 8 and 9K.

Should this apply nevertheless, the included lower degree of protection shall be indicated separately, e.g.IPX4K/IPX7.IPX5/IPX7.IPX6K/PX8 or IPX6K//IPX9K.

1

Water drips vertically

Vertical drips shall not have any harmful effects or impair performance.

2

Water drips with enclosure inclined by 15°

Vertical drips shall not have any harmful effects or impair performance when the enclosure is tilted at any angle up to 15° on either side of the vertical.

3

Water spray

Water spray at an angle up to 60° on either side of the vertical shall have no harmful effects or impair performance.

4

Splash water

Water which splashes against the enclosure from any direction shall not have any harmful effects or impair performance.

4K

Splash water with increased pressure

Water which splashes against the enclosure from any direction with increased pressure shall not have any harmful effects or impair performance.

5

High-velocity water

Water which is directed against the enclosure from any direction as a jet shall not have any harmful effects or impair performance.

6

Strong high-velocity water

Water which is directed against the enclosure from any direction as a strong jet shall not have any harmful effects or impair performance.

6K

Strong high-velocity water with increased pressure

Water which is directed against the enclosure from any direction as a strong jet with increased pressure shall not have any harmful effects or impair performance.

7

Temporary immersion in water

Water shall not penetrate in a quantity causing harmful effects or impair performance if the enclosure is immersed in water temporarily under specified pressure and time conditions.

8

Continuous immersion in water

Water shall not penetrate in a quantity causing harmful effects if the enclosure is continuously immersed in water under conditions which shall be agreed between supplier and car manufacturer, but which are more severe than code 7.

9K

Water during high-pressure/steam-jet cleaning

Water which is directed against the enclosure from any direction shall not have any harmful effects or impair performance.

IPX9 AND IPX9K RATINGS – MEANING AND TESTING CONDITIONS

As explained in the introduction, IPX9 and IPX9K ratings guarantee protection against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. The testing conditions for IPX9 and IPX9K ratings are precisely defined by the IEC and ISO.

When small devices are tested, they are put on a rotating stand inside a testing chamber. The rotation speed is 5rpm. For large devices, the IEC standard allows tests in an open space (outside the testing chamber).

For both standards, the water temperature is set at 80°C (±5°C). The distance between the device and the spray nozzle is 100-150mm. For large enclosures, the IEC allows a distance of 175mm ±25mm.

Small devices are sprayed from 4 positions/angles (0°-30°-60°-90°), measured from the horizontal axis. Large devices are sprayed from all angles.

Water pressure is 8-10 MPa, and the volume is 15 l/min.

The test duration is 30sec per position for small devices or 1min per m2 for large devices. The minimal test duration for large devices is 3 minutes.

The marking of an enclosure with the Ip code IPX34K means:

[IPX3] Protection of the electrical equipment access to the enclosure against foreign objects with adiameter of more than 2,5 mm (protection against foreign objects), and protection of persons handling rods of 2,5 mm diameter or more against access within the enclosure(protection against access).

(IPX4K) Protection of electrical equipment within the enclosure against harmful effects resulting from water splashing against the enclosure with increased pressure from any direction (pro-tection against water)

The marking of an enclosure with the lP code lP16KB means:

(IPX1)Protection ofthe electrical equipment within the enclosure against foreign objects with adiameter of more than 50 mm(protection against foreign objects).

(IPX6K) Protection of electrical equipment within the enclosure against harmful effects resulting from water directed against the enclosure from any direction as a strong jet with increased pressure(protection against water).

Protection of persons against finger contact with hazardous parts within the enclosure (pro-tection against access).
